From the Kitchen to the Parliament: Why Nigeria Desperately Needs the 30% Special Seats Bill

Let me tell you something that has been sitting heavy on my chest.

We wake up early. We cook. We run markets. We birth babies. We carry everyone.

But when it comes to the room where Nigeria's biggest decisions are made? We are almost nowhere to be found.

Today, let's talk about the 30% Special Seats Bill. President Tinubu just pledged to act on it. And whether you like politics or not, this one affects you.

Grab your tea. Let's talk.

---

The Number That Shocked Me

Out of 469 lawmakers in Nigeria's National Assembly, only 22 are women.

That is less than 5%.

Women are nearly half of Nigeria's population.

How does that make sense?

Imagine your daughter's school. 95% of teachers are men. Those men decide what girls wear, what happens if a girl gets pregnant, whether there are sanitary pads.

Would you trust that school?

That is our parliament right now.

---

What Is This Bill? (Simple)

It says: let us set aside 30 out of every 100 seats for women.

We are not kicking men out. We are just creating space. Because waiting for "merit" has failed us for 60 years.

Rwanda did this. Now over 60% of their parliament is women. Their laws on maternal health and women's safety are among the best in Africa.

If Rwanda can do it, why can't we?

How This Affects You

1. Childbirth
145 Nigerian women die daily giving birth. If women who have felt labour pain were in parliament, would they sit and do nothing?

2. Your Daughter
Over 22 million Nigerian girls are married before 18. A female lawmaker will fight harder to keep girls in school.

3. Your Business
Try getting a bank loan without land. Most women can't. Female lawmakers understand this.

4. Your Safety
Rape. Domestic violence. We are tired. Women in parliament won't let these cases die on a desk.

A Final Word

We have carried this nation on our backs. It is time for a seat at the table.

Let's not be silent. We are too many to be ignored.
